As the first symptoms of COVID-19 took hold, Victor was working in the studio on a drawing of a ceramic bear. As the fever intensified and he became increasingly disorientated, the image seemed to take on a life of its own. The single bear gradually transformed into a swirling circle of bears around a white-hot spiral at the centre.
After recovering, Victor turned to a calmer subject: a pair of imagined painted vases. Inspired by the storytelling tradition of ancient Greek pottery, he aimed to create drawings that could almost be mistaken for real ceramic objects. Using mainly chalk pastels, he depicted everyday domestic lockdown scenes unfolding across the surfaces of the vases, both inside and outside the home.
