Although made over an extended period and in a variety of media, these works are linked by a common interest in recording movement. Some capture a single gesture, while others use repeated figures or sequences to follow an action as it unfolds. Together they show one strand running through Victor’s work: an ongoing curiosity about how movement can be observed, understood and represented.
Among these works is a Video of a Scroll entirely composed of charcoal drawings depicting Victor’s grandchildren playing on the beach—running through the waves, digging in the sand, and interacting with one another.
An early influence was the pioneering photographic studies of Eadweard Muybridge, who, in late nineteenth-century California, recorded hundreds of sequences of people and animals in motion. Victor acquired a complete reproduction of Muybridge’s published studies many years ago, and they have remained a continuing source of inspiration for his own investigations into depicting movement.
