The Living Scroll

The Living Scroll

The Living Scroll is an ongoing visual journal begun in 2017, recording life as it unfolds. It moves through home, family life, walks and journeys, combining observation with memory and imagination.

The early scrolls concentrate on home and its surroundings. Over time, the work has become more experimental, introducing abstraction and a wider range of materials.

Each scroll is drawn directly onto a ten-metre length of Fabriano cartridge paper, without editing or revision: everything remains. The work records both everyday life and discoveries made through drawing.

Materials include pencil, ink, watercolour, pastel and charcoal, alongside gouache, acrylic, collage and metalpoint. Dry media are fixed to prevent smudging, and materials are often mixed within a single scroll. One scroll also includes digital drawings, printed and assembled into the sequence.

There are now more than ninety scrolls, approaching a kilometre in total length. They are intended to be experienced physically, with viewers moving along them as scenes and stories unfold.
