The Universe

Victor’s work is driven by a compulsion to understand what lies within an image—to look “around the corner” of appearances and sense a larger meaning. Rather than simply rendering what is before him, he is drawn to the idea that every subject is connected to what surrounds it, in both space and time.

This led first to panoramas, where a wider field of vision suggests relationships between separate elements, and later to the Living Scroll, linking images across time as well as place. This thinking also informed his collaboration on Douglas Harding’s The Man with No Head. Harding asks a simple question: instead of seeing ourselves as separate individuals looking out at the universe, what if the universe itself is part of what we are?

The images here play with this idea, moving between the unimaginably large and infinitely small, the everyday and the mysterious. Everything is separate, yet connected; perhaps the whole universe can be found in its smallest part.
